How August Bartley Used the Baskonia Alavés Academy to Reach the Next Level
For many American players, the pathway to the next level often runs through college soccer. But preparing for that level requires more than just talent, it requires the right environment, exposure, and development.
For August Bartley, an 18-year-old player from Chicago, that step came through the Baskonia Alavés Academy in Spain.
Choosing Spain to Improve
August’s decision to join the Academy was driven by one objective: reach his highest level and open as many opportunities as possible.
“I came to the academy to get to the highest level I could. It offered more than anything else I found.”
Like many players in the United States, his pathway included balancing club football, high school competition, and attending college ID camps. But he recognized that to stand out, he needed a different level of preparation.
Preparing for the College Pathway
One of the key outcomes of his experience in Spain was how it translated back to the American system.
After returning to the United States, August attended college camps and trials, where he saw a direct impact from his time at the Academy.
“My level here definitely transferred over and improved. It helped me get offers and opportunities in the US.”
The Academy not only supports development on the pitch, but also provides tools that are essential for the recruitment process:
- Game footage and highlights
- Player reports from coaches and academy directors
- Direct references and contacts within the football network
“The coaches here vouched for me. I had reports, videos, and contacts that helped me through the recruitment process.”
This combination gives players a clear advantage when approaching college programs.
A Different Level of Training
One of the biggest differences August experienced was in the daily training structure and technical focus.
“The technical work here is unlike anything I’ve done in the US. Every day is different and focused on a specific part of the game.”
Training sessions are designed not only to improve technique, but to ensure that what players learn translates directly into match situations.
“After training here, I go into games and feel things paying off. I’m able to do things I couldn’t do before.”
This connection between training and performance is a key part of the development model.
Expanding Opportunities
For players like August, the Academy creates multiple pathways.
His next step is to continue his career in the United States through college soccer, while keeping future options open.
“I see myself going to college in the US, and from there you can enter the MLS draft or even come back to Europe.”
The experience in Spain not only improved his level, but also expanded his network and understanding of the game at an international level.
A Platform to Move Forward
August’s journey highlights how the Baskonia Alavés Academy can support players who are targeting different pathways, whether that is college soccer, professional opportunities, or continued development abroad.
Player are better prepared to take the next by combining:
- Professional training methodology
- Individual development
- Exposure and recruitment support
- International experience
